Television Show Communication

Television Show: Home Improvement/ without sound
1.      What do you think the characters relationships are based on the ways in which they are communicating?
When the show start there is a man and woman in the living room communicating among one another and sense the woman had on a robe ironing clothes I figured they were husband and wife. There were also three little boys outside playing football and the way the father was engaging in playing with them I thought they were his children.
2.      What are they feeling and expressing based on the nonverbal behavior you are observing?
At the beginning of the show the lady seems like she is a little upset looking at her husband television show and see her husband watching other females. The husband seems like he is explaining himself using hand gestures. The children seem happy and joyful playing with their father. Although one little boy seem like he is upset about something and his father talks to him and the little boy begin to smile. The wife seems like she is unhappy when she goes out to dinner with the husband and she get up and walk away from the table.
With Sound
1.      What assumptions did you make about the characters and plot based on the ways in which you interpreted the communication you observed?
I was corrected about the man and woman being married with three boys. I made the assumption that the wife was upset with the husband looking at other woman but she actually made a bet and thought it was kind of funny.
2.       Would your assumptions have been more correct if you had been watching a show you know well?
I believe my assumption would have been more correct if I was watching a show I knew well because most shows have the same plot just different circumstances. Most shows that you watch often is based on the same themes such as, drama, horror, or comedy.

Who demonstrates competent communication?

Someone who demonstrates competent communication within the early childhood field would be one of my teachers Ms. Flo. I really enjoy seeing her get into her advocate mode and tell everyone information about what’s going on in the early childhood field. She also will give you references or resources so you as an early childhood advocate can see it for yourself and take action as you feel. I can feel and see the passion she has for young children and how she really enjoy helping people become effective child care providers. She has worked in all aspects of the early childhood field from being a teacher, smart start program, director and now a teacher at a local community college. She communicates with people on a real, respectful and truthful way. I can just say, she tells you how it is. I would love to communicate some of her communication behaviors because I believe she is very effective and a real advocate for young children and families. She finds out things to help the parents she teaches to ensure the education and care of their children. Ms. Flo is a great person, advocate and communicator.

Welcoming Families Around the World

The country of my families origin is Africa. Five ways I would prepare myself to culturally responsive  to the families needs is understanding the importance of the families culture. Making sure I can also communicate with the family accurately. I would prepare myself by researching the background of people from families country of origin. Its also important to prepare myself to make the experience for the family professional and helpful. Ways in which I hope this preparation become beneficial for both me and the family is being about to understand each other and make the visit enjoyable. Regardless of the visit I hope the family would come back to visit whenever they need to.

Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

An example of a microaggression I experienced this week was sitting in the lobby at the work place and my coworkers were having a conversation. One of the ladies committed saying  going natural is not a great idea for you. I couldn’t believe that she would make a commit about the other ladies hair like that. I felt that it was rude and hurtful. Especially if the lady felt strong about getting back to her roots and showing her cultural differences.

This example made me aware of the microaggressions that take place on day to day bases. I believe a lot of people are not aware of the things they say to others and think their mindset of thinking is okay. The discrimination of the lady going natural was very hurtful because the other lady had no understand of the purpose of the lady’s decision.

Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

My friend from undergrad gave me her definition of culture as characteristic of her childhood that made her into the person she is today. Diversity she stated was the different people in the society and understanding we all are different.
My husband’s definition of culture is the background of a person’s family and diversity is the different kind of people and races of the world.
My co-workers definition of culture is the ethnicity and beliefs of people’s families. Diversity is the different types of people and understanding that no one is alike.
The aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this course are included in the answers I received by understanding that people are different and culture relates to people everyday lives. Culture does not consist of just race or ethnicity but how people celebrate holidays, religion, economics, and political parties. Some aspects that have been omitted is the broadness of culture. There are no limitations on how to define culture and things that people doing with their everyday lives are aspects of culture and diversity. Ways in which thinking about other people’s definitions of culture and diversity influenced my thinking about these topics are understanding the importance of peoples point of view and perspectives. Knowing that people do not see things the same way I do and everyone has their own thinking process.

My Family Culture

If I had to move to a different country that was totally different from the United States and I could only bring three items with me the three items would be my wedding ring, my degree, and a family photo.  I would explain to people that these three ideas are important to me because I truly love my husband and my wedding ring is a symbol of our unity, I work hard to receive my degree and I would always want to remember the faces of my love ones.
If I had to give up two out of three items I would really be heart broken. It would be hard for me to decide which item to keep. I realized that I am a young lady that loves her husband, career, and family.
